Paver patio and walkway installation in Metro Detroit

Patio, Walkway & Driveway Installation | Metro Detroit Hardscaping

Precision-built hardscape surfaces in brick pavers, natural stone, and concrete pavers, engineered to withstand Michigan's demanding freeze-thaw cycles while elevating the look and function of your property.

Built for Michigan's Toughest Conditions

The Guy Outdoor Services designs and installs patios, walkways, and driveways for residential and commercial properties throughout Metro Detroit, including Warren, Sterling Heights, Troy, Rochester Hills, Birmingham, and Bloomfield Hills. Our hardscape installations use industry-leading base preparation techniques specifically developed for Michigan's clay-heavy soils and extreme temperature swings, which can shift from sub-zero conditions to above-freezing multiple times in a single week during winter.

With more than 20 years of hardscape construction experience and active MGIA and MNLA membership, we understand the material science and structural engineering that separate a patio that lasts decades from one that heaves and cracks within a few seasons. As a family-owned company that has been serving Metro Detroit since 2006, we stake our reputation on the longevity of every surface we build.

Built for Michigan's Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Metro Detroit averages more than 100 freeze-thaw cycles per year. Every one of those cycles puts stress on hardscape surfaces. A patio built in Arizona or the Carolinas uses a fundamentally different base system than one built in Southeast Michigan. Our installation specifications are designed specifically for local conditions.

  • Excavation depth calculated for local frost line (42 inches)
  • Compacted aggregate base layers exceed ICPI standards
  • Geotextile fabric separates clay subsoil from aggregate
  • Proper slope grading directs water away from structures
  • Polymeric sand joints resist weed growth and insect intrusion
  • Edge restraint systems anchored to prevent lateral creep
  • Drainage integration prevents water pooling and ice buildup
  • Sealant application protects against salt and de-icer damage

What We Build

From intimate backyard retreats to expansive commercial entries, our hardscape capabilities cover the full range of paved outdoor surfaces.

Patios

Dining patios, fire pit seating areas, pool surrounds, multi-level terraced patios, and covered outdoor rooms. We integrate seating walls, raised planters, and built-in lighting to create spaces that function as true extensions of your home. Typical residential patios range from 200 to 1,000 square feet, though we regularly build larger installations for estates and commercial properties.

Walkways

Front entry walkways, garden paths, stepping stone trails, and connecting paths between outdoor living areas. Walkways are often the most visible hardscape element on a property, and we treat them as design statements rather than utilitarian afterthoughts. Properly graded walkways also improve accessibility and safety during Michigan's wet and icy months.

Driveways

Full driveway installations and driveway apron accents in brick pavers, permeable pavers, and natural stone. Paver driveways outperform poured concrete and asphalt in both durability and curb appeal, and their modular construction makes future repairs straightforward. We engineer the base system for vehicular traffic loads, which requires deeper excavation and heavier compaction than pedestrian-only surfaces.

Seating Walls & Borders

Freestanding and structural seating walls built from natural stone, manufactured block, or brick. Seating walls define patio edges, create visual separation between zones, and provide built-in seating that eliminates the need for bulky outdoor furniture around fire features and gathering areas.

Our Hardscape Installation Process

Every hardscape project follows a structured sequence that ensures structural integrity, design accuracy, and a clean finished product.

Design & Material Selection

We discuss your vision, evaluate site conditions, recommend materials, and create a scaled layout showing pattern, borders, and integration with existing landscape elements.

Excavation & Base Preparation

We excavate to the required depth, install geotextile fabric, place and compact aggregate in lifts, and verify grade with laser levels. This is the most critical phase and the one most commonly shortcut by less experienced contractors.

Paver Installation & Detailing

Pavers are laid to the approved pattern, cut precisely at borders and transitions, and secured with edge restraints. Polymeric sand is applied and activated to lock joints.

Compaction & Cleanup

A final plate compaction sets the pavers and the site is cleaned thoroughly. Sealer is not applied immediately — pavers need at least one full season to release efflorescence, the natural white film that forms during curing. Some pavers come pre-sealed from the manufacturer. We review the completed surface with you before considering the project finished.

Paver Patio Restoration and Hardscape Repair in Metro Detroit

Not every hardscaping project starts from scratch. Many Metro Detroit homeowners have existing patios, walkways, or driveways built by previous contractors or installed years ago that are showing signs of age. Common issues include settling and unevenness caused by inadequate base preparation, weed and moss growth between joints where polymeric sand has deteriorated, faded or stained pavers from years of exposure and de-icer contact, and cracked or chipped units from improper compaction or vehicular traffic on surfaces not engineered for it.

Our paver restoration process begins with a thorough assessment of the existing installation. We evaluate the base condition by removing select pavers to inspect aggregate depth and compaction, check for proper geotextile fabric installation, and identify root causes of any settling or shifting. In many cases, targeted repairs can restore a patio or walkway to like-new condition without a full tear-out.

Common Restoration Services

  • Releveling settled sections by lifting pavers, adding and compacting base material, and resetting
  • Full polymeric sand replacement to eliminate weed growth and stabilize joints
  • Paver sealing to restore color, protect against staining, and resist salt damage
  • Individual paver replacement for cracked, chipped, or heavily stained units
  • Edge restraint repair to stop lateral spreading at patio borders
  • Drainage correction to resolve pooling water on the paved surface

For patios and walkways in Warren, Sterling Heights, Troy, and surrounding communities where the original installation was done properly but the surface has aged, a professional cleaning and re-sanding can make a 10-year-old patio look newly installed. We use commercial-grade pressure washing equipment calibrated for paver surfaces, followed by joint stabilization and optional sealant application. This service typically costs 20 to 30 percent of a full replacement and adds years of additional service life to the existing hardscape.

Patio & Hardscape FAQ

Straightforward answers to the questions Metro Detroit homeowners ask most about paver patios, walkways, and driveways.

A properly installed brick paver patio will last 25 to 50 years or more in Michigan. The key factor is the base preparation. The pavers we typically install have compressive strength ratings of 10,000 PSI or higher — compare that to poured concrete at 4,000 to 5,000 PSI. This is because of the manufacturing process: pavers are vibrated under high pressure, making them extremely dense and virtually indestructible. Failures occur when the base is inadequate for local soil and frost conditions, which is why we over-engineer our aggregate base systems relative to minimum industry standards.

Interlocking concrete pavers rated for vehicular traffic are the most common and cost-effective choice for Michigan driveways. They handle freeze-thaw cycles well because individual units flex with ground movement rather than cracking like poured concrete. Natural stone pavers (granite, bluestone) offer a premium alternative with exceptional durability, though at a higher material cost. We evaluate your specific conditions, traffic patterns, and budget to recommend the optimal material.

Most residential patios at grade level do not require a building permit in Metro Detroit municipalities. However, projects that involve retaining walls over four feet in height, electrical work for built-in lighting, or gas lines for fire features may require permits. We handle all permit research and applications as part of our project management, so you do not need to navigate municipal requirements on your own.

Prevention starts below the surface. We excavate to the proper depth for your soil type and traffic load, install geotextile fabric to prevent clay migration into the aggregate, compact the base in controlled lifts using plate compactors, and verify the finished grade with laser levels before a single paver is placed. Edge restraints are spiked into the compacted base to prevent lateral movement, and polymeric sand fills the joints to lock units in place. This multi-layer approach is what keeps the surface stable through years of Michigan freeze-thaw cycles.

In many cases, yes. If the existing pavers are still in production, we can source matching units and blend the transition. When an exact match is not available, we design a complementary border or transition zone that makes the connection intentional rather than patched. During the consultation, we assess your existing hardscape and provide honest guidance about what is achievable.
