Pond Builder & Installation | Metro Detroit

Custom ponds that look like they have always been part of the landscape. Naturalistic construction using Michigan fieldstone, native plantings, and engineered filtration systems that keep water clear without constant chemical intervention.

A Pond Transforms a Backyard Into a Destination

There is a reason people gravitate toward water. The sound, the movement, the reflected light, the wildlife it attracts -- a well-built pond creates an entirely different outdoor experience than any other landscape element. It becomes the focal point around which everything else in the yard orients.

Pond construction in Southeast Michigan comes with unique opportunities and challenges. Our region's high water table means excavation often encounters groundwater, which actually simplifies fill and reduces reliance on municipal water for top-offs. However, Michigan's clay soils, freeze-thaw cycles, and leaf-heavy deciduous canopy require specific construction techniques and filtration approaches that differ from warmer climate builds.

The Guy Outdoor Services has been building ponds across Metro Detroit since 2006. We construct ecosystem ponds that use biological filtration to maintain water clarity, naturalistic garden ponds designed for visual beauty, and pondless waterfall systems for properties where a full pond is not practical. Every installation is designed for Michigan's climate from the liner system through the winter shutdown procedure.

Pond Systems We Build

Each pond type serves different goals. We help you select the system that matches your property, maintenance comfort level, and vision for the space.

Ecosystem Ponds

A self-sustaining aquatic system that balances plants, fish, bacteria, and filtration to maintain clear water naturally. Ecosystem ponds include a skimmer for surface debris, a biological waterfall filter, aquatic plantings in multiple zones, and a gravel bottom that provides surface area for beneficial bacteria colonies. These ponds support fish populations and require minimal chemical intervention once established. Ideal for homeowners who want a living water feature they can interact with.

Naturalistic Garden Ponds

Designed primarily for aesthetic impact. Garden ponds use natural stone edging, moss rock boulders, and strategic plantings to create the appearance of a spring-fed pool that emerged naturally in the landscape. These ponds may or may not include fish. The focus is on visual beauty, sound from a cascading waterfall, and integration with the surrounding garden. Michigan fieldstone and Petoskey-area boulders give these ponds an authentic regional character.

Pondless Waterfalls

All the sound and visual drama of a waterfall without the open water surface. Water cascades over natural stone into a hidden underground reservoir filled with gravel, then recirculates back to the top. Pondless systems are ideal for families with small children, properties with limited space, or homeowners who want the water feature experience without ongoing pond maintenance. They can be winterized easily and restarted each spring in minutes.

Formal Reflecting Pools

Geometric, architectural water features with clean edges, still water surfaces, and minimal planting. Reflecting pools suit contemporary landscape designs and provide a dramatic visual element that is entirely different from naturalistic ponds. We construct these with reinforced liners, concrete bond beams, and recirculating filtration systems. Particularly striking in Troy and Birmingham properties with modern architecture.

Building Ponds for Michigan's Climate

Pond construction in Michigan requires knowledge that out-of-state pond companies and DIY guides do not cover. Our builds account for these regional realities.

Winter Ice Management

Metro Detroit ponds freeze solid on the surface from December through March. Fish survive under the ice as long as gas exchange is maintained. We install pond de-icers and aeration systems that keep a small area of the surface open throughout winter, preventing toxic gas buildup beneath the ice cap. Pump shutdown and plumbing winterization are included in our fall maintenance service.

Leaf Load

Michigan's deciduous canopy drops an enormous volume of leaves in autumn. Leaves that accumulate in a pond decompose into organic sludge that consumes oxygen and feeds algae the following spring. We install pond nets in October and remove them after leaf drop is complete. For ponds near heavy canopy, we design skimmer systems oversized for the leaf volume they will encounter.

Clay Subgrade

Excavating in Macomb County clay is slower and harder than in sandy soils, but it provides a stable, non-shifting foundation for the liner system. We use the clay subgrade to our advantage, shaping shelves and contours that hold their form permanently rather than eroding over time.

Pond Construction FAQ

Pond installations range from $8,000 for a small pondless waterfall to $50,000 or more for large ecosystem ponds with extensive stone work, multiple waterfalls, and integrated lighting. A typical 8x11 foot ecosystem pond with a waterfall, skimmer, biological filter, and natural stone edging runs $15,000 to $25,000. We provide detailed proposals after an on-site consultation where we discuss size, style, and feature preferences.

A properly built ecosystem pond requires surprisingly little maintenance. Weekly tasks include checking the skimmer basket and monitoring water level. Seasonal tasks include spring startup (cleaning, restarting pumps, adding beneficial bacteria), fall netting, and winter shutdown. Annual full cleanouts are recommended every 1 to 2 years. We offer maintenance programs for clients who prefer professional management of these tasks.

Yes. Pondless waterfalls fit in spaces as small as 4x6 feet. Small ecosystem ponds can be built as compact as 6x8 feet. For very small yards, a bubbling boulder or container water feature provides the sound and visual of water in a footprint measured in inches rather than feet. We have installed water features in postage-stamp backyards in Royal Oak and Birmingham that transformed the entire outdoor experience.
