Brick Paver Patio Installation | Metro Detroit
Engineered base systems, premium paver products, and precision installation. Brick paver patios designed to perform through Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles without settling, shifting, or cracking.
A Paver Patio Is Only as Good as What Is Underneath It
Brick paver patios remain the preferred hardscape surface across Metro Detroit for good reason. They offer superior freeze-thaw durability compared to poured concrete, virtually unlimited design flexibility, and the ability to repair individual pavers without replacing the entire surface. When installed correctly on a properly engineered base, a paver patio will outlast the house it sits behind.
The critical word in that sentence is "correctly." Southeast Michigan's glacial clay soils and aggressive freeze-thaw cycles -- an average of 60 to 80 freeze-thaw transitions per year in Macomb and Oakland counties -- are exceptionally hard on hardscape installations. Patios built on inadequate bases begin settling within 2 to 3 winters. Joints open, edges shift, and what was once a level surface becomes a tripping hazard with standing water in the low spots.
The Guy Outdoor Services builds brick paver patios on engineered aggregate base systems designed specifically for Michigan's soil conditions. Our base specifications exceed the ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) minimum standards because Michigan's clay subgrade and frost depth demand more robust construction than national minimums provide. The result is a patio that stays flat, drains correctly, and looks as good in year ten as it did on installation day.
Paver Brands and Materials We Install
We work with the top manufacturers in the industry and source natural stone from quarries across the Midwest. Every product we install is rated for Michigan's freeze-thaw exposure.
Unilock
Unilock's EnduraColor technology produces pavers with color that runs through the full depth of the product rather than just the surface layer. Their Beacon Hill Flagstone, Rivercrest Wall, and Artline series are among the most specified products in Metro Detroit. We are experienced with Unilock's full residential and commercial product lines including permeable paver systems.
Belgard
Belgard offers one of the broadest paver selections in the market. Their Mega-Bergerac line provides a natural stone appearance in a manufactured product, while their Origins series delivers clean, contemporary aesthetics. Belgard's Weston Stone wall system pairs seamlessly with their paver products for integrated patio and wall designs.
Techo-Bloc
Techo-Bloc leads in architectural-grade paver design. Their Blu 60 Smooth and Industria slabs create the sleek, large-format appearance that contemporary Troy and Birmingham homeowners request. Techo-Bloc products carry some of the highest compressive strength ratings in the industry, making them an excellent choice for vehicular-rated driveway applications as well.
Natural Stone
For clients who want a surface that no manufactured product can replicate, we install natural flagstone, bluestone, and travertine patios. Natural stone requires additional base preparation and more skilled installation to manage irregular thicknesses and shapes, but the result is a one-of-a-kind surface with character and depth that improves with age.
Base Construction for Michigan Conditions
The base is everything. A beautiful paver surface installed on an inadequate base will fail. Here is what goes into every patio we build.
Excavation to Proper Depth
We excavate a minimum of 10 to 12 inches below finished grade for pedestrian patios, and 14 to 16 inches for vehicular applications. This depth accounts for 6 to 8 inches of compacted aggregate base, 1 inch of bedding sand, and the paver thickness. Michigan's frost depth extends to 42 inches, so while we cannot excavate below frost line for every patio, adequate base depth with proper drainage prevents frost heave damage.
Compacted Aggregate Base
We install 21AA crushed limestone in 2-inch lifts, compacting each lift with a plate compactor to 95% modified Proctor density. This multi-lift approach creates a monolithic base that distributes load evenly and resists the lateral movement that freeze-thaw cycles create. Single-lift base installation -- dumping 6 inches of stone and compacting once -- is the most common shortcut we see in failed patio repairs.
Edge Restraint
Every patio receives a continuous edge restraint system spiked into the compacted base with 10-inch galvanized spikes. Without proper edge restraint, the perimeter pavers migrate outward over time, opening joints and destabilizing the interlocking pattern. Edge restraint is non-negotiable on every installation.
Brick Paver Patio FAQ
Brick paver patio installations range from $25 to $55 per square foot depending on paver selection, base requirements, site access, and complexity. A standard 300 square foot patio using quality manufactured pavers with proper base construction typically falls in the $10,000 to $16,000 range. Premium materials, integrated seating walls, fire features, and complex layouts increase the investment. We provide detailed proposals after an on-site consultation.
A straightforward 300 to 400 square foot patio takes 3 to 5 days from excavation to final joint sand. Larger patios with integrated walls, steps, or fire features take 1 to 3 weeks. We provide a timeline with every proposal and maintain it through daily progress communication.
Sealing is optional but recommended. A quality paver sealer enhances color, stabilizes joint sand, and provides stain resistance. We recommend sealing 60 to 90 days after installation to allow the bedding sand to fully compact. Resealing every 3 to 5 years maintains protection. We use solvent-based sealers for natural stone and water-based sealers for manufactured pavers, selecting the product that best matches each material.
