Hardscape Contractor | Metro Detroit
Patios, retaining walls, driveways, walkways, fire features, and outdoor structures. Every element engineered for Southeast Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles, clay soils, and aggressive winters.
Hardscaping Is the Structural Backbone of Every Outdoor Space
Hardscaping encompasses every non-living element in a landscape: patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, steps, seating walls, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and architectural structures. These elements define the functional layout of your outdoor space, create usable surfaces, manage grade changes, and provide the framework for plantings, lighting, and water features.
In Southeast Michigan, hardscaping requires structural engineering that milder climates do not demand. Our glacial clay soils heave and shift with every freeze-thaw cycle. Frost depth extends 42 inches. Winters bring 40 to 50 inches of snow that must be managed without damaging surfaces. Every base system, drainage detail, and material selection must account for these conditions.
The Guy Outdoor Services has been Metro Detroit's hardscape contractor since 2006. We are ICPI-certified and work with Unilock, Belgard, Techo-Bloc, and natural stone from Midwest quarries. Our in-house crews handle every phase from excavation through final joint sand, ensuring consistent quality throughout.

Choosing the Right Hardscape Contractor
Hardscaping is the most expensive landscape category and the one where shortcuts cause the most visible failures.
Base Construction Methods
Ask how deep they excavate, what aggregate they use, and whether they compact in lifts. The base determines everything. We excavate minimum 10 inches for pedestrian surfaces and install aggregate in 2-inch compacted lifts to 95% Proctor density.
Material Knowledge
Not every product is rated for Michigan. Some fail catastrophically under 60 to 80 freeze-thaw cycles per year. We specify only products with proven freeze-thaw data backed by manufacturer warranties valid in our climate zone.
Drainage Integration
A hardscape contractor who ignores drainage sets up their installation for failure. Water is the primary enemy. We build drainage into every project -- behind walls, under edges, at grade transitions, and anywhere water accumulates.
Hardscaping FAQ
Late April through mid-November. Spring lets you enjoy the project all summer. Fall offers moderate temperatures and firm soil. We book 4 to 8 weeks out during peak season, so plan early for your preferred timeline.
Yes. Retaining walls over 4 feet require engineering and permits. Some cities require permits for structures and gas work. We manage the process including engineering drawings and inspections.
