Mulch Installation & Delivery | Metro Detroit
Premium mulch delivered and professionally installed. The single most effective way to improve your landscape's appearance, suppress weeds, and protect plant root systems through Michigan's extreme temperature swings.
Mulch Does the Heavy Lifting in Every Landscape Bed
Fresh mulch is the single fastest way to transform the appearance of any landscape. But appearance is only the beginning. In Southeast Michigan, mulch serves as insulation for root systems during winter freezes, a moisture barrier during summer dry spells, and a weed suppressant that reduces maintenance time and chemical dependency throughout the growing season.
Most homeowners underestimate how much mulch matters -- and how much damage incorrect mulch application causes. Mulch piled against tree trunks (volcano mulching) creates conditions for bark rot and root girdling that kills mature trees over 3 to 5 years. Mulch applied too thin provides no weed suppression. Mulch applied too thick suffocates root systems. The right depth, the right material, and the right technique make the difference between a healthy bed and a slowly declining one.
The Guy Outdoor Services has installed mulch on thousands of residential and commercial properties across Metro Detroit since 2006. We source from local Michigan suppliers, deliver in bulk, and install at the correct depth with proper spacing around trunks, stems, and hardscape edges.
Mulch Options for Every Application
We source premium mulch products from Michigan suppliers and recommend the right material based on your bed design, plant types, and aesthetic preferences.
Double-Shredded Hardwood
The most popular choice across Metro Detroit. Double-shredded hardwood mulch knits together to stay in place on slopes, decomposes slowly to feed the soil, and provides excellent weed suppression. It delivers a clean, uniform appearance that complements virtually any landscape style. Color ranges from natural brown to dark chocolate depending on the wood species and aging process.
Cedar Mulch
Cedar offers natural insect-repellent properties that make it a preferred choice for beds near foundations and outdoor living areas. The aromatic oils that deter insects also slow decomposition, meaning cedar mulch retains its depth and appearance longer than standard hardwood. Its lighter golden-brown color works especially well in contemporary landscape designs.
Dyed Mulch (Black, Brown, Red)
Color-enhanced mulch provides consistent, bold color that lasts longer than natural mulch. We use only iron-oxide and carbon-based dyes that are safe for plants and soil. Black mulch creates dramatic contrast against green foliage and light-colored stone. Brown blends naturally into most landscapes. Red makes a statement but must be used deliberately to avoid clashing with plant material.
Decorative Stone and Gravel
For beds where organic mulch is impractical -- around fire features, in drainage swales, or in low-maintenance areas -- decorative stone provides a permanent ground cover that never decomposes. We install over landscape fabric with proper edging to prevent migration. River rock, pea gravel, and crushed granite are popular options throughout the Metro Detroit market.
The Difference Between a Mulch Job and a Professional Installation
Anyone can dump mulch in a bed. Professional installation means every detail is executed correctly so the mulch actually performs its intended functions.
Bed Edge Definition
Before any mulch touches the ground, we cut or refresh every bed edge to create a clean, defined border between turf and mulch. This edge prevents grass from creeping into beds and gives the entire landscape a finished, maintained appearance. In Metro Detroit's clay soils, proper edging also prevents mulch from washing onto hardscape surfaces during rain events.
Correct Depth Application
We apply organic mulch at 2 to 3 inches. Existing mulch depth is measured first, and we add only what is needed to reach the target. Properties that receive annual mulch without accounting for existing depth end up with 6 to 8 inches of compacted material that suffocates roots and harbors fungal growth. We correct over-mulched beds as part of the installation process.
Crown Clearance
Mulch is pulled back 3 to 4 inches from every tree trunk, shrub base, and perennial crown. This air gap prevents moisture-related bark disease and root girdling. It is the most commonly skipped step in mulch installation and the one that causes the most long-term plant damage.
Mulch Installation FAQ
Late April through mid-June is the ideal window. The soil has warmed enough for active root growth, spring cleanups are complete, and fresh mulch is in place before summer heat and weed pressure peak. Fall mulch applications (October) are also beneficial as winter insulation for root systems. We do not recommend mulching in mid-summer when beds are already under heat stress.
Professional mulch installation in Metro Detroit typically costs $75 to $120 per cubic yard installed, which includes material, delivery, bed prep, edge work, and installation at proper depth. A typical residential property with moderate bed area uses 5 to 15 cubic yards annually. We provide exact quantities and pricing after measuring your beds.
In most cases, no. Decomposing mulch adds organic matter to Michigan's heavy clay soils, which improves soil structure over time. We add only enough new mulch to bring the total depth back to 2 to 3 inches. If existing mulch has compacted into a water-repellent mat or exceeds 4 inches, we rake and loosen it before adding the fresh layer.
